Théâtre de l’alliance française

In 1956, the Théâtre de l’Alliance Française opened on Boulevard Raspail, in the heart of the legendary Montparnasse–Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, under the name Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui. At the opening gala, the Tout-Paris gathered in the 465-seat theater. Among the distinguished guests were notable figures such as Albert Camus and Danielle Mitterrand.

From its very first days, the venue was a resounding success, hosting performances of all kinds. In 1958, the famous Serge Gainsbourg recorded one of his rare concerts with his father here. Later, legendary artists such as Coluche would grace its stage.

Throughout its years of activity, the theater has thrived in the intellectual vibrancy of young students from around the world, who come to the Alliance Française de Paris to learn the French language and immerse themselves in its culture.

Beyond theatrical performances, the venue frequently hosts receptions, shows, conferences, meetings with Prix Goncourtlaureates, debates, symposiums, seminars, and New Year’s ceremonies. It has also been home for many years to live public recordings of the renowned France Inter radio program Le Masque et la Plume.

Finally, in 2023, the Festival Jazz à Saint-Germain-des-Prés Paris made its much-anticipated return to the Théâtre de l’Alliance Française.
